How One Book Became My January Ritual

Almost two weeks in on 2026 and I’m just about to close the cover on my third book of the year — so it feels like the right time to catch you up on what I read first.
Three years ago, a good friend of mine shared a tradition she holds close. Every January, without fail, she starts the year by reading the same book. It’s short, based on a true story, and an easy read — but meaningful in a way that lingers. At its core, it’s about a man reconnecting with his dying professor and learning what truly matters in life through their weekly conversations.
I didn’t ask many questions. I trusted her instinct. If a book was worthy of beginning every new year with, I figured it deserved a place in my hands too.
The book was Tuesdays with Morrie. It wasn’t new — in fact, it had already celebrated its 25th anniversary — but thankfully, it was still easy to find. Two days after ordering it, it was sitting on my kitchen counter.
I finished it in just over a day. And just like that, the tradition became mine. Every new year since, this is the book I start with.
Last fall, while traveling in Thailand, my husband and I were out for dinner with two other couples. The restrooms were a short walk from the restaurant, and on our way back we stumbled across a small bookstore tucked along the street. We wandered in without much expectation — and there it was. The very first book on display.
Tuesdays with Morrie. In English.
Each of our friends left with a copy that night. I hope they’ve found the same quiet perspective, grounding, and meaning in it that I have — the kind that feels especially right at the start of a new year.
